TO ALL MY STUDENTS

Remember that your design needs to be uploaded to your blog by this Sunday evening 9pm.

Make sure your design consists of 3 spaces:
One above ground (studio A)
One on the ground (gallery - shared between artist A and B)
One below ground (studio B)

And 2 staircases:
staircase A connecting studio A with the gallery
staircase B connecting studio B with the gallery.

The 3 spaces (and the staircases) need to represent and support the artists and their artwork - and its just 3 spaces (no kitchens, toilets etc).
There is no rules of whether the spaces are protected from wind, rain, sun etc. - but you have to have thought about these things and ultimately justify your design decisions.

Looking forward to seeing your results:-)

To all students in my class, course 1101

Thanks for a great first session yesterday.
It was lovely to meet all of you and I am looking forward to working with you this semester.
Sorry we didn't get enough time to choose sketches for you to work with until I see you next week.

The sketch
Think about what motivated you to chose the artist and the artworks you did.
Reflect on the words you chose to describe these artworks. Remember these words are there to help you to express a distinctive and significant approach to engaging with each artists work.
Make sure the sketch include 3 spaces:

One below ground (studio 1)
one above ground (studio 2)
and one on the ground plane (many of you forgot this 3rd space! its the gallery)
Think about how these spaces are connected.
Russells lecture next week is about stairs.

And remember that the sketch is a SECTION.
You might want to revisit Russell's lecture which gives a lot of inspiration and understanding as to what a section is and inspiration to drawing techniques and styles.
Have fun exploring hatches, patterns, thicknesses. Find inspiration on the web when searching on your words and your artist.

NOW - Look at your sketches and choose!
Don't spend the whole week doing new sketches.
Be confident that your design will improve as the process continues
It is very important that you get started with the task of this week:

Complete by the beginning of next weeks tutorial.

1.
In consultation with your tutor take one of the sections created in class and develop it in 3 dimensions using Google SketchUp 8.
Note: In Google SketchUp begin by following the "Google Sketchup New Users" video tutorials here: http://sketchup.google.com/training/videos/new_to_gsu.html. Do parts 1-4. Have the "Instructor" open while you select tools to use WINDOW > INSTRUCTOR. We expect that the 3 dimensional model will be different than you first imagined in your sketch's, this is a normal part of the design development process so move ahead with confidence as your 3 dimensional model "evolves".
TIP: You will be most successful when learning computer software if you work together in groups. Your collegues in ARCH1101 are one of your most valuable resourses.
2. Save two images from your SketchUp model and upload them, along with the page from your sketchbook that you based it on, to your blog. Include the two words that the architecture responds to as a caption to the images and confirm your material selection.
3. In the "Settings" of your Blog go into the "Posts and Comments" and then change "Who Can Comment?" to " Anyone - includes Anonymous Users". Make sure you hit the "Save Settings" button at the top right of the page.
Note: make sure you save the SketchUp model in a safe place as it will be a part of your EXP1 submission.
